Tomato Flatbreads


A simple and healthy lunchtime snack for when your bread bin is empty! They're super quick to make and kids will love kneading and rolling out these flat breads, not to mention decorating with their favourite toppings. 

Makes 8 flatbreads


  • 100g plain flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 100g wholemeal flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 100-150ml warm water
  • butter for frying
  • 80-100g tomato passata
  • A handful of poppy seeds or toppings of your choice


Combine the flours and salt in a mixing bowl. Mix the oil into the flour using your fingertips until it looks like fine breadcrumbs. Then add in the water, bit by bit, and knead with your hands inside the mixing bowl to make a soft dough. Divide in half and then half again, and then again to make 8 balls of dough - great for practicing a bit of maths as you go! Roll each small ball out on a floured surface and fry in a small amount of butter in turn. Wrap your cooked ones in a clean tea towel. Spread tomato passata on the cooked flatbreads and sprinkle with poppy seeds.
